My Two Holidays: Hanukkah and Christmas Story
Danielle Novack, illus. by Phyllis Harris, Scholastic/Cartwheel, $5.99 paper (32p) ISBN 978-0-545-23515-0
Sam's mother is Jewish and his father is Christian, which makes Sam feel like the odd boy out among his school pals. But after a conversation with his mother ("[M]any people celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. It's very special to have two holidays"), Sam learns to be proud of his interfaith family—and discovers that his classmates think his situation is "really cool." The pedantic story and bland illustrations smooth over issues faced by interfaith families, leaving little emotional traction. Ages 3–5. (Sept.)
