Monster Counting Book 1 to 20
Frances Mackay, illus. by Dreamstime. Frances Mackay, $12.99 paper (24p) ISBN 978-0-646-85093-1
Monsters of all colors, shapes, and sizes, sporting varying quantities of legs and eyes, populate the pages of this lively counting picture book, which numerates from one to 20. Beginning with a singular electric green creature sporting a silly grin (“ONE green monster pulling a funny face,” Mackay writes), every digit is accompanied by a distinctly animated monster, each revealing a unique trait that defines their paired numeral. The creator also couples each observation with an interactive line; “What funny faces can you make?” appears alongside the first creature. Interactive text doesn’t always correlate with the numbered element presented, which may require a logic jump for young readers: on one spread showing a large, solitary polka-dotted monster “with THIRTEEN spines,” readers are invited to “count the spots.” Nevertheless, the varied critters lend joviality to the act of counting in this quirky picture book. Ages 4–8. (Self-published)
