Martin & Tommy
Welleran Poltarnees. Simon & Schuster, $14 (1pp) ISBN 978-0-671-88067-5
Using the illustrations from a Swiss picture book published in 1920, Poltarnees takes an inviting look at the bonds of friendship. Tommy the elephant and Martin the bear build themselves a house, plant a garden, raise chickens and generally share an untroubled life. A soothing text, glimmering with gentle humor, and full-bodied artwork create a bucolic setting for the special pleasures of childhood. While there is little in the way of plot, the animals' activities--cooking, playing on go-carts--are thoughtfully chosen and reassuring, and Tommy and Martin have the appearance of two much-loved stuffed animals. Uncomplicated illustrations in muted pastels seem tinged with nostalgia, and are well served by the measured, good-natured text. A charming book. Ages 3-6. (Apr.)
