Here and There: Photographs
Joyce Ravid. Alfred A. Knopf, $0 (103pp) ISBN 978-0-679-74151-0
These 87 images by Ravid ( The Meaning of Life ) exude originality, which is attributable only partially to her restrained but sensitive hand-coloring of creatively processed prints. Though apparently inspired during her travel assignments for magazines, these subjects appear not as the specifics of photojournalism but rather as selective, sometimes wry, subjective perceptions of the ordinary, enhanced by quietude: a mysterious stone stairway in Budapest, theater seats on a Florida sand dune, keys hung on a French garden wall, a bust of Freud in Vienna. There is no explanatory text to distract the viewer. (Jan.)
