Coping with the Male Ego in the Workplace
Sandra Grymes. Longmeadow Press, $15.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-681-41454-9
Grymes, who manages a division of a social services corporation, and Stanton, a human resources administrator, offer a carefully reasoned study which should prove useful to women. Their two basic premises are: although the balance of power is shifting, the American workplace is a man's world; and, by nature or nurture, men and women are different. Although the authors maintain that this book is not intended as a how-to guide, the dozens of case histories they adduce will surely help women to overcome their inclinations to be too deferential, too accommodating and too sensitive to the male ego. Grymes and Stanton here confront difficult situations, like those involving clients who expect special favors. They also deal with sexual harassment, but only as part of the larger picture of gender harassment. (Jan.)
