Glassmakers of Gurven
Marlys Boddy. Abingdon Press, $11.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-687-14820-2
In the town of Gurven, the people are building a church, and three glassmakers show up to work on the large glass window. One of them has brought panes for a rosy red window, the other for a brilliant blue window and the third for a happy yellow window. They argue incessantly about which color the large round window should be, and the townspeople complain about their bickering. The solution, they decide, is to compromise and create a window of all different colors. Despite the rather overstated messageE pluribus unumthe book's worth is contained in its historical reference to the time of church builders and scholastic theological schools; attention to how the glass is made would have perfectly suited this context. As it is, the story is cheerful enough, and the goofy townspeople of Gurven will have adults and children chuckling. Ages 5-8. (May)
