The Cubbies: Quotations on the Chicago Cubs
Bob Chieger. Atheneum Books, $9.95 (307pp) ISBN 978-0-689-11782-4
The author has collect hundreds of humorous and derogatory remarks printed or broadcast about the Chicago Cubs, one of the losingest teams in professional sports. There are chapters quoting coaches, managers, players, wives, families, women, fans, etc. Typical entries: ""Cub Fever: Catch it and die.'' ``Eddie Umbrage . . . threw a chair at a writer . . . the chair sailed high and outside.'' ``Ruthven, a man of few words and even fewer pitches.'' The main exception to the heap of abuse is Ernie Banks, without whom ``the Cubs would finish in Albuquerque.'' Mainly for Cub fans. (April)
