Requiem for the Resistance: The Civilian Struggle Against Nazism in Holland and Germany
Herman Friedhoff. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, $29.95 (281pp) ISBN 978-0-7475-0173-2
In this suspenseful and thoughtful ``dramatized memoir,'' British book publisher Friedhoff, member of a WW II Dutch ``underground'' group named Apostles, recalls his exploits with considerable modesty. The author helped operate a clandestine press, gathered and transmitted information to the Allies and German resistance and maintained escape routes for Jews and other Nazi victims until, in 1943, he was forced to flee to England with his fiancee. In telling this colorful story, Friedhoff notes that the widespread civilian resistance movement did much to inspire postwar European unity. Photos. (Dec.)
