Hundreds of mostly unexceptional color photos combine with hyperbolic, promotional-type copy to limit this pricey volume's appeal only to the most rabid tennis fans. Dozens of sports writers and photographers here cover the 78 events of the second tour of the Association of Tennis Professionals; the book contains no information about Evans, however. Some competitions, such as the four international opens that make up the Grand Slam, are well known; most, like Brazil's Kolynos Cup and the Norstar Bank Challenge Cup on Long Island, will be familiar only to tennis insiders. Participants include fading stars Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, today's headliners Stefan Edberg and Boris Becker and dozens of newcomers. Labelled as the ``official illustrated guide,'' this chronicle begins with page-long tributes to the tour's corporate sponsors, IBM and Lufthansa. (Feb.)
