Chick Pea and the Changing Trees
Linda Cole Design. Barron’s, $6.99 (8p) ISBN 978-0-7641-6593-1
A yellow chick and his bluebird friend take readers through the year, looking at how trees change with the seasons. Each of the four spreads is devoted to a different season, and each has an embedded slider that, when pulled, lets children change a tree’s appearance; golden leaves fall from the tree in autumn, while apples turn from green to red in the summer. The meter in the accompanying verse can be rough (“Chick Pea and Sweet Pea play in the snow./ There’s no sign of the leaves now. Where did they go?”), but the crisp digital illustrations are appealing, if a bit generic. Ages 2–5. (Apr.)
