Let’s Go to the Museum: A Modern Art Adventure Maze
Luisa Vera. Schiffer Kids, $19.99 (36p) ISBN 978-0-7643-6574-4
A trip to the museum turns into a breezy lesson in art history for the peach-tinged figures wandering through this maze-filled gallery outing. A ballet dancer leaping comically out of a Degas offers an initial invitation (“Want to go for a tour around the museum?”), while further encouragement comes from a Gauguin, a Matisse, a Mondrian, and others. Encompassing impressionism, post-impressionism, expressionism, cubism, surrealism, abstract art, and pop art, spreads briefly introduce largely white well-knowns such as Carrington, Cassatt, Picasso, Pollock, and Warhol as well as lesser-known female artists. Suggestive of works by featured artists, elaborate page-filling mazes allow readers to immerse themselves in Hockney’s swimming pools, Van Gogh’s spiraling starry skies, and beyond. A lack of labels leaves artist attribution up to guesswork, but Vera’s bold colors and cartoon styling add whimsy, making modern art feel playful and accessible. Ages 4–8. (June)
