The Story of Job
Beverly Brodsky. George Braziller, $12.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8076-1142-5
Retelling for children the biblical story of Job is a difficult task to begin with, but Brodsky's version is unfortunately convoluted and awkward. The solid block paragraphs with no separation of narration and dialogue are frustratingly difficult to read. Brodsky's pen-and-wash watercolor paintings are as powerful as those in her Caldecott Honor book The Golem, but they don't seem as appropriate for children. The saturated colors are magnificent, the pen strokes add additional strength, and there are some scenes which are clearly delineated; but many of the illustrations may be too elusive for their intended audience.
