Goodnight, Sweet Angel
Clare McNally. Tor Books, $6.99 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8125-5103-7
A macabre imagination and a tight rein on your nerves are required for McNally's (Somebody Come and Play) latest release. Her vivid portrayal of a twisted, child-molesting father trying to ravage his daughter from the grave is enough to give any reader nightmares. Determined to get her four-year-old, Emily, away from her demented ex-husband, Jenn Galbraith takes a teaching position in another state. On Jenn's and Emily's way there, the ex-husband runs their car off a mountain road, and in so doing kills himself and puts young Emily in the hospital in a coma. When Emily awakes, she has acquired an ""invisible"" new best friend, Tara, who claims to be the only one who can protect Emily from her vengeful father's evil spirit. This is a grisly tale made worse by the sickening notion of a ghoulish father chasing his toddler around with a pizza cutter. (May)
