Mariano Fortuny

This intelligent, well-illustrated survey of the life and work of Spanish-born designer Fortuny (18711949) fills in many details about the ""magician of Venice.'' Remembered primarily for his gossamer silk ``Delphos'' gowns inspired by classical Greek and Egyptian garments (many of which survive and are avidly collected by those wealthy enough to afford them), Fortuny was accomplished in all aspects of art from engraving to photography to fabric design. ``This Renaissance man receives full-scale treatment here,'' PW wrote, ``with the aid of over 200 color, sepia and black-and-white photographs.''
