Winning Moves: How to Come Out Ahead in a Corporate Shakeup
Jane Ciabattari. Rawson Associates, $18.95 (327pp) ISBN 978-0-89256-332-6
A teacher at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Ciabattari notes that as a former magazine editor she was involved in several corporate shake-ups, both with companies that have been taken over and with corporations that have done the taking over. Her book is well organized: in three parts, it deals with strategies for coping with the stages of a shake-up, offering suggestions for various age groups; maneuvers that can be made by those who are fired or made to feel insignificant; and techniques that managers can employ to smooth a corporate transition. The winning moves proposed are practical, ranging from anticipating change before it happens to retraining for another career field. There are also quizzes and exercises in self-assessment. First serial to Glamour, Working Woman and Working Mother; Literary Guild alternate. (September)
