Traditional Foods Are Your Best Medicine: Health and Longevity with the Animal, Sea, and Vegetable Foods of Our Ancestors
Ronald F. Schmid. Ocean View Books, $17.95 (270pp) ISBN 978-0-941145-03-9
Utilizing studies of the long-lived people of Georgian Russia, personal clinical experience and other research, naturopathic physician Schmid promotes organic foods that, he predicts, will continue to be scarce unless we begin ""voting for them with our food dollars.'' The author reinterprets life-expectancy statistics less favorably than usual and exposes corruption in the meat industry. Communities consuming organic, ``traditional diets'' are consistently found to be free of chronic diseases and ``spiritual bankruptcy,'' while their progressive neighbors, introduced to refined foods, do not display such immunity. Schmid unpopularly, but refreshingly, argues that the culprit of contemporary chronic disease is not animal fat, but poor-quality fat in our grain- (and cardboard-) fed cattle and pasteurized dairy products. The point, however, is belabored and suffers a dearth of practical information. Illustrations not seen by PW. Author tour. (August 3)
