Blintzes for Blitzen
Elise Okrend, Philip Okrend. Mixedblessing, Incorporated, $8.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-9651475-0-7
When one of Santa's reindeer gets a whiff of the aroma from Bernie's blintz shop, he takes a break from delivering gifts on Christmas Eve. Bernie and his family teach Blitzen about Hanukkah, chiefly through the consumption of blintzes; Blitzen, assuming an ambassadorial role, remarks, ""That sounds a lot like our Christmas celebration, except we remember a different kind of miracle."" The two-color art is inept and the storytelling often brittle, with the magic and awe left out of the holidays--it's as if a good nosh is the essence of Hanukkah and Santa represents the true spirit of Christmas. Ages 3-up. (Sept.)
