Little Mice/Ratoncitos

Jaramillo plays with the Spanish “cinco ratoncitos” nursery rhyme in this bilingual addition to her Canticos series of accordion-style board books. The story of five mice snacking on cheese and avoiding a cat unfolds in Spanish on one side and English on the other; once again, Jaramillo lets each version stand on its own, opting for clean rhymes over precisely matched translations; the Spanish side features “cinco ratoncitos de colita gris” (colored gray) while the English version stars “five little mice with tails wide awake.” Flaps inset in the pages introduce several shapes (circles, squares, hexagons, etc.), and the antics of Jaramillo’s expressive mice will keep children amused in whichever language they are reading.
