The female evangelical audience is already familiar with Chonda Pierce's onstage antics, but many Christian women have not yet become acquainted with the zany humor of Barnhill, author of Scandalous Grace
. Barnhill's popularity will be on the rise because of this book, which deals with forgiveness with self-deprecating remarks and cut-to-the-chase admonitions. Barnhill tackles this oft-worn subject with constant, sometimes biting humor, yet she succeeds in bringing circumspect and serious closure to each topic. Discussing her own failings, Barnhill shares personal stories, such as the time her flight was delayed and she had to decide whether to rent a car to reach her speaking engagement. While contemplating the pros and cons of locating and renting a car, the author, at perpetual high speed, rattled on and on despairingly until her spouse reminded her that she had driven herself to the airport. By so admitting to imperfection, Barnhill asserts that believers will jump-start their journey toward discovering and embracing divine forgiveness. While Christian women will find much humor in Barnhill's text, the fast pace of the opening chapters isn't steady throughout; midway, Barnhill relies heavily on pages of quotes from readers rather than supplying her own material. Despite this disappointing finish, Barnhill will surely welcome back old fans and endear herself to new ones. (Dec.)
