Who Is Jesus? Linking the Historical Jesus with the Christ of Faith
Darrell L. Bock. Howard, $15.99 trade paper (256p) ISBN 978-1-4391-9068-5
Bock titles his introductory chapter: “Jesus by the Rules: And the Rules Were Not Made by the Church.” So who wrote the rules? Certainly not those who argue for an orthodox approach to Jesus’ life and teachings, or those who argue that Jesus never existed as a historical figure. Instead, Bock, research professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, insists that qualified historians have created a series of objective and reasonable rules, and these must be followed by Jesus historians. Comparing the biblical text with what is known about the historical context in which Jesus lived can help sort out the many understandings and misunderstandings that have arisen over the years. After listing 10 relevant rules for Jesus scholars, Bock then examines the scriptural accounts, from the ministry of John the Baptist to the discovery of the empty tomb. What emerges is a cogent and consistent view of Christ and his earthly ministry. Bock fearlessly challenges the religious establishment’s orthodox methodologies, bringing Jesus scholarship to the world in a bold and convincing way. (Sept.)
