Unconventional Wisdom: Irreverent Solutions to Tough Problems at Work
Thomas L. Quick. Jossey-Bass, $30.95 (174pp) ISBN 978-1-55542-177-9
In his 18th book, Quick ( Managing People at Work Desk Guide ) begins by upsetting certain business shibboleths, urging managers to progress from certainty to ambiguity and to put some chaos in their order. He goes on to emphasize the effective management of time and the accomplishment of goals through partnership in the workplace. Other advice includes admitting fallibility to build credibility, listening to dissenters, paying attention to feedback and ``handling opposition without handling it.'' And managers are reminded that they constantly must be aware of what goes on in their organizations. Although they may resist it, the book could be helpful to tradition-minded, rigid executives.
