What Do You Like?
Michael Grejniec. NorthSouth, $14.88 (1pp) ISBN 978-1-55858-176-0
Unusually well-conceived illustrations add luster to this simple but stimulating picture book. Hand-lettered text conveys a dialogue between a girl, who announces ``I like rainbows, my cat, music, etc.'' on one spread, and a boy, who on the following spread responds, ``I like rainbows, etc., too.'' Pictures suggest that each choice carries a range of imaginative possibilities--the girl stands under a rainbow, the boy pictures himself climbing one; for music, the girl plays a grand piano as kaleidoscopic birds soar overhead, the boy is shown turbaned and in the process of charming a snake. The real spur to the imagination comes from the artwork, executed in watercolors on Colombe paper, with images magnified 250%. The effect is of a magical texture with perfectly saturated colors, certain to elicit awe. The rainbow of hues here delights the eye. Ages 4-6. (Sept.)
