The Daily Feast: Everyday Meals We Love to Share
Esther Rose Graber with Ellen, Ann, Sibyl, Susan, Jane, and Yvonne. (2, $29.95 ISBN 978-1-56148-756-1
The seven women of the Graber family, whose heritage is Amish and Mennonite, share their favorite meals in this cookbook, which began as a photocopied collection of recipes for family members and which is now a real life cookbook. Esther Rose and her surgeon husband Ron lived in Puerto Rico with their large family (which includes the five daughters who co-authored this book), who have since grown up, married, had children of their own, and have traveled extensively throughout Europe, China, and Turkey. These travels are reflected in the diversity of the dishes included here. Each woman (mother, five daughters and daughter-in-law Yvonne) shares three menus—a soup meal, a family weeknight meal, and a special occasion dinner. Soups from all over the world include a Senegalese soup with chicken, peanut butter, and curry powder; a Mexican posole stew; and a Thai ginger chicken soup. Entrees include fish (bourbon-glazed salmon with sesame seeds); chicken (baked chicken caribe); and meat (grilled, spiced lamb chops). For dessert they offer a homey fresh strawberry pie and a fried ice cream. (Apr.)
