Narradores Puertorrique~nos del 70: Guia Biobibliografica
Victor F. Torres. Editorial Plaza Mayor Inc, $0 (311pp) ISBN 978-1-56328-176-1
This book fills a void of bibliographic material covering 10 of the most important figures in contemporary Puerto Rican literature. A presiding member of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials, Torres notes that there has been little to update Josefina Rivera de Alvarez's Diccionario de literatura puertorriquena (Dictionary of Puerto Rican Literature, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena, 1979). This new, much-needed guide focuses on writers who emerged during the 1970s and who produced a critical mass of work that has been the subject of study and interest not only in Puerto Rico, but internationally. Other available reference sources at best merely mention most of the authors in this guide, and entries on the few that are treated more extensively elsewhere (e.g., Rosario Ferr or Ana Lydia Vega) do not approach the level of bibliographic comprehensiveness offered here. Each writer is treated in a separate chapter, beginning with a brief biographical sketch and followed by exhaustive primary bibliographies current up to mid-2000 and extensive secondary bibliographies. A critical essay contributed by an academic specialist concludes each chapter. Highly recommended for academic libraries and for public libraries that support research-level collections of Spanish-language literature. Mary Jo Zeter, Michigan State Univ., East Lansing
