Baby to Brooklyn
Rajiv Fernandez. Pow, $6.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-57687-785-2
Fernandez, an architect, juxtaposes emblematic elements of a child’s existence (building blocks, kindergarten, a onesie) with their Brooklyn hipster counterparts (the Brooklyn Bridge, a biergarten, a romper). Some of the side-by-side comparisons feel more cringe-inducing than clever (“Bun in the Oven” vs. “Man Bun,” a girl vs. the show Girls), but there’s no faulting Fernandez’s punchy silhouettes, which show real visual wit (as when a line of kindergarteners mirrors a row of beer taps, or the way a cluster of dominos evokes the structure of the Domino Sugar Factory). Even so, it’s squarely aimed at Kings County parents, not newborns. Up to age 3. (Apr.)
