Although the title of and introduction to this book suggest a practical and multifaith guide to a spiritual retirement, the authors fail to deliver on both counts. Rather than emphasize "...a spirituality that reaches across and beyond religious traditions," it relies heavily on a Judeo-Christian concept of God and gives only a handful of cursory nods to other faiths, including a reference to the concept of karma and an acknowledgment that some people may refer to God as Allah. Rather than pen a how-to, this husband/wife team, a former priest and nun, offer a collection of musings on their spirituality, rife with personal anecdotes and wisdom gathered over the course of their lives. Specific retirement discussion is confined mostly to observations and lacks true advice. Although the book has some lovely thoughts on finding spirituality in things like the birds and squirrels in the back yard, and it has a healthy dose of affirmations, it does not provide any sort of cohesive suggested routine or ritual to develop a deeper spirituality in the golden years.
