One Fell Swoop: A Renata Radleigh Opera Mystery
David Linzee. Coffeetown, $15.95 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-1-60381-577-2
In Linzee’s so-so sequel to 2016’s Spur of the Moment, British opera singer Renata Radleigh is surprised to run into her obnoxious brother, Don, in London when she thought he was in St. Louis selling real estate. Don says he’s involved in a megadeal with an unnamed billionaire. Back in St. Louis, Renata’s lover, journalist Peter Lombardo, decides to do some digging and soon discovers that Don is acting as an agent for no fewer than six foreign corporations buying up property in the decaying St. Louis suburb of Parkdale. Renata tries to identify the billionaire, but she’s attacked for her troubles. Meanwhile, Peter’s inquiries reveal a surprising link to his previous employer, Adams University. Renata flies to St. Louis, where she and Peter encounter many odd characters, including Don, and get wind of an extravagant scheme that threatens to ruin careers and lives. Interesting characters somewhat offset a plot that never develops much momentum. Despite the subtitle, readers will find virtually nothing about opera in this installment. (Apr.)
