Fans of alternate history will enjoy Kincy’s lively and sensuous steampunk-influenced tale of a magical WWI. Asian-American mercenary Ardis and recently resurrected Prussian prince and necromancer Wendel are traveling incognito, attempting to evade their former allies, the Order of the Asphodel, when they are captured in Bulgaria. The partners and lovers reluctantly agree to return to Wendel’s home in Phillipopolis to repay the debt they owe archmage Konstantin, despite the lingering bad blood between Wendel and his family. They also face hard questions about their betrayal of the Order and the archmages of Vienna. Kincy’s world is filled with intriguing magic and monsters, as well as an effortless inclusion of characters from a variety of backgrounds (including Nikola Tesla) within the Eastern Europe setting. Readers will savor the depth of character, well-built story, and polished prose, and will be eager to seek out more in the series. (BookLife)
