La Gallinita Roja y la Espiga Trigo = The Little Red Hen and the Ear of Wheat
Mary Finch. Barefoot Books, $6.99 (32pp) ISBN 978-1-84148-087-9
PreS-Gr 2-This traditional tale of the little red hen who finds an ear of wheat and tries to get her companions to help her in planting it is well-translated into Spanish. At every step of the process, her housemates, the rooster and the mouse, refuse to help her out. So she plants, waters, grows, harvests, and mills the wheat and then bakes it into a delicious loaf of bread. When the rooster and the mouse ask for helpings, she refuses to share her bounty, because they had not helped. They learn their lesson well; the second half of the book shows all three going through the process again and, this time, enjoying the fruits of their labor together. The strong colors in the eye-catching illustrations will keep readers turning the pages. Appropriate for school and public libraries as well as bookstores. MOB
