When Jesus Sleeps: Finding Spiritual Peace Amid the Storms of Life
Luis M. Martinez. Sophia Institute Press, $9.95 (131pp) ISBN 978-1-928832-06-5
First published in 1914, this ode to simplicity offers Catholics helpful suggestions on how to please God. Genuine simplicity, which de Gibergues defines as ""purity of intention,"" arises when individuals humbly direct all their activities to the sole purpose of pleasing God. Various chapters discuss practicing simplicity toward God, oneself and others; explore simplicity's fruits and signs; and advocate finding simplicity through attending to God's presence. The penultimate chapter presents the example of Mary as a paragon of simplicity. While the book's language is a bit dated and demanding, readers who can see past it will be richly rewarded with spiritual insight. (July)
