City Kaiju
Mark Rapacz. Blastgun, $12.95 trade paper (236p) ISBN 978-1-941601-00-6
Rapacz (Ficstructor) creates an energetic romp through a gritty, nightmarish dystopia, the origins of which are deliberately left obscure. Bram is a bike messenger who must deliver a mysterious package to a mysterious client. This task brings him inexorably closer to the weirdness that is at the heart of City Kaiju. Meanwhile, his ragtag group of friends is being hunted by a peculiar creature that goes by the name of Evil Bill. The nature of the city unfolds in a whirlwind of terror and gore, vivid and often stark. Rapacz’s writing recalls Lovecraft, with plenty of visceral horror and demonic creatures. His work has an immediate and gripping rawness, blended with dry wit; both are refreshing in the horror genre. Unfortunate spelling and grammar mistakes suggest that a good editor could have made this tremendously entertaining tale even better. (BookLife)
