Hello! Hometown Heroes
Toni Armier, illus. by Anna Jones. Little Genius, $8.99 (24p) ISBN 978-1-953344-08-3
In unevenly scanning rhyming text, Armier follows a brown-haired, tan-skinned child; his guardian; and their spotted dog. They walk through town on the way to school, greeting adults of different vocations along the way, including a mail carrier, a police officer, a farmer, and firefighters. Armier begins with a simple description of each profession on the verso page (“The paramedics rush to get/ someone who’s sick./ Then they’ll drive to/ the hospital quick, quick, quick”), with the child’s salutations presented in large red font on the recto (“Hello, paramedics!”). Digital illustrations by Jones depict various urban workplace environments in cheery shades, showcasing the community’s diversity by portraying people of varying skin tones, ages, and abilities. A board book that may encourage the youngest readers to begin appreciating everyday heroes. Ages 2–up. [em](Apr.)
