PreS-Gr 2-In this endearing tale, a little boy befriends a snail and admires his snug shell. He loves the idea of having a house all to himself. The snail is also curious about what it would be like to live with a family. So they switch places. The boy learns that it's not easy being a snail, with all the predators that consider him a delicacy, not to mention a diet of leaves and grasses. However, he does learn to appreciate the small things like the smell of damp earth, giant raindrops, and the first leaf to unfurl in the spring. It isn't until he sneaks a peek at how life is going for the snail in his old house that the boy becomes homesick for his family. They switch back and remain good friends, each one in his own home. The watercolor illustrations are magical. Recommended for public libraries and bookstores. M.O.B.
