It is rare that an author attempts to present the often tangled and incoherent political history of Latin America in one volume. But after 20 years of effort, Nudelman, a political and social science professor at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (National Autonomous University of Mexico), has compiled a comprehensive and objective resource dictionary, which includes all of the important players, from Manuel Marulanda V lez, the infamous leader of the Colombian guerrilla movement known as FARC, to Maria Eva Duarte Peron, better known as ""Evita."" This work offers terse but informative capsules, invaluable for researchers, students, professors, and authors. A total of 1,271 entries, covering political parties and labor unions as well as political leaders, describe the ideas and actions of these movements and people. Even literary authors with a political edge, like St. Lucia's Derek Walcott and Peru's Mario Vargas Llosa, have entries. Several indexes by country, name, and political organization, along with chronologies and maps, greatly help to put historical developments in perspective. Brazil and French- and Dutch-speaking countries, such as Haiti and Suriname, are also included.
