The New Age Herbalist: How to Use Herbs for Healing, Nutrition, Body Care, and Relaxation
Richard Mabey, Michael McIntyre. MacMillan Publishing Company, $32.5 (288pp) ISBN 978-0-02-577180-2
This excellent compilation of historical lore and practical information on the ``useful plants'' considered herbs ranges far and wide: by British writer Mabey's ( The Unofficial Countryside ) standards, white birch, aloe, asparagus and parsley all qualify. In separate chapters, readers learn how to cultivate herbs, cook and create other products (e.g., dyes) with them, and, above all, live a healthier life with their aid. Although the recipe for an anti-anemia decoction may require you to search far afield for ingredients, a well-stocked spice rack and this volume will quite readily yield sage toothpaste and chamomile hair rinse. And readers can safely rely on Mabey's extensive glossary. Though dubbed ``new age,'' his beautifully illustrated guide to the time-honored powers of herbs should interest most gardeners, home chemists and nascent healers, not to mention cooks and purists of all persuasions.
