The Queen of Put-Down
Nancy J. Hopper, Nancy J. Hooper. Marcel Dekker, $12.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-02-744411-7
Cassie is steeling herself for a boring summer without her best friend, Emily, who is leaving on vacation, when tall, pretty Sabrina Evans joins Cassie's class. Cassie eagerly befriends the new girl, while Sabrina manages to alienate most of the other kids--especially Emily. Cassie is afraid she will be forced to choose between her best friend and her new friend. Sound structure and swift action make this otherwise superficial story of loyalty, generosity and self-esteem hit its mark. Children will identify with the perky dialogue; a school play, horseback riding and a life-threatening medical emergency galvanize the proceedings. Ages 9-12. (Oct.)
