Death Echo: A Libby Kincaid Mystery
Kerry Tucker. HarperCollins Publishers, $19 (231pp) ISBN 978-0-06-017700-3
Tucker ( Cold Feet ) crafts a welcome third entry to her series featuring New York City magazine photographer Libby Kincaid. Libby is visiting her native Ohio when Pam Bates, an old acquaintance, asks her to investigate the disturbing behavior of her foster mother, who has taken to her room and ventures out only to mail a mysterious weekly check. In exchange for her help, Libby can have an interview with Pam's aunt Mavis, the previously incognito author of a bestselling book of sappy inspirational essays. In the small town of Echo, Libby meets other members of Pam's extended family, including her troubled brother Neil and blind, compelling cousin Glen. Then Pam's mother is killed and Libby runs up against townspeople who know each other's business (and sometimes secrets) but won't talk to a stranger. Libby's first-person narration lacks details at first, but her voice quickly gets stronger as she spins a thoroughly entertaining tale in a playful and contemporary tone. Tucker's mystery is marred only by a denouement that unfolds too quickly. (June)
