Men's Fitness Magazine's Complete Guide to Health and Well-Being
Joe Weider, Kevin Cobb, Men's Fitness Magazine. HarperResource, $20 (400pp) ISBN 978-0-06-273354-2
Immensely informative and insightful, this comprehensive guide lives up to its claim of completeness and deserves a place in every man's personal library. Eschewing the glitz that sometimes gilds Men's Fitness magazine, the authors cover issues ranging from embolisms to orgasms, skin care to romantic relationships. Chapters are organized into such areas as physical health, mental health, body image, food, sexuality, relationships, aging and fitness. A final chapter explodes ""Nine Myths About Men,"" including the ever-popular ""If your mother's father was bald, you'll be bald too."" Boxed lists, suggestions, sidebars and short features punctuate the pages and include such topics as ""Real Men Use Moisturizer,"" ""Gay/Straight Friendships"" and an excellent essay by Arnold Schwarzenegger on ""Advic for Aging Weight Trainers."" Sidestepping sexist language and hipster cliches, the authors dispense clear, well-focused advice, whether it's as practical as what a heart attack feels like or a more thoughtful reflection on male anger. There are recipes for high-performance weight-loss menus and suggestions for a simple yet effective weight training and exercise program. This is a standard-setting title. Author tour. (June)
