Stacked: The Art of the Perfect Sandwich

Owen Han, with Rick Rodgers. Harvest, $28 (272p) ISBN 978-0-06-333065-8

TikTok creator Han shares inventive sandwich options in his colorful debut. Han, who vaulted to stardom with his grandmother’s shrimp toast recipe, excels at riffing on American classics: there are Buffalo wings on a baguette with blue cheese dressing, two types of New Orleans–style po’boys, and grilled cheese with tomato soup. He defines sandwich broadly enough to encompass a Peking duck wrap and egg rolls filled with cabbage and carrots. These camera-ready sandwiches are complex creations with multiple components; in Han’s world, making a PBJ with banana entails grinding the peanut butter and making berry jam from scratch. There’s nothing timid about the flavors or the calorie counts either: a bagel is loaded with cream cheese and latkes, waffles are used as the bread for fried chicken sandwiches topped with honey and butter, and a hero with breaded and fried veal cutlets incorporates a creamy vodka sauce. A dessert chapter features a stunning sandwich of fruit suspended in whipped cream that is mosaic-like when cut. Three bread recipes and a selection of pickles, sauces, and sides round out this freewheeling collection. It’s a must for anyone looking to take their sandwich game to the next level. (Oct.)
