Hello There, Sunshine

Tabitha Brown, illus. by Olivia Duchess. HarperCollins, $21.99 (40p) ISBN 978-0-063-34226-2

Brown makes her children’s book debut with an adorable ode to the brightness we all carry inside. Tab, a Black child portrayed with an infectious grin, adores the sun, and a cloudy day finds her wondering, “How can we have a good day without it?” Reassured by Mama that “there’s always a chance to shine,” Tab and dog Grady head out to find the sun. As they engage with their community, helping to finish building a birdhouse, fly a kite, and more, Duchess incorporates yellow elements (a bird, the kite, Tab’s tee) that hint at the protagonist’s efforts across cartooned neighborhood scenes. When Tab meets up with family for lunch, she reflects on her day, aptly musing that while the sun may not always shine, “When I’m kind and helpful, I can light up the sky.” Secondary characters are portrayed with various abilities, body types, and skin tones. Ages 4–8. (Mar.)
