This collection of Aldo Leopold's writings, spanning the years 1904-1947, charts the development of the conservation ethic that led to his A Sand County Almanac. As a young forester in 1915, Leopold (1887-1948) accepted such dogmas of the time as fire prevention and the eradication of ``varmints.'' But by 1936, after a few years in the Southwest, he was advocating the preservation of wolves and grizzly bears. Gradually, his interests broadened to encompass watershed and game management, conservation economics and sustainable agriculture.
