Fight: Winning the Battle That Matters Most
Craig Groeschel. Zondervan, $15.99 (160p) ISBN 978-0-310-33374-6
Oklahoma pastor Groeschel (Soul Detox) is a prolific writer who aims squarely at male readers with his newest. “Ladies, if you’re reading this book, you probably should put it down,” he warns very early. Groeschel exegetes the biblical story of Samson to diagnose the problems facing men today: lust, entitlement, pride. It’s a good cultural read, considering the malfeasances that make headlines today. But the takers for the biblical answer—“Use... the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God”—are already sitting in Christian churches, looking for their next study material. This group can be sizable; Groeschel’s tone has echoes of Promise Keepers and John Eldredge. But it trades too much in stereotypes to be a breakout book. Still, one can wish that narcissistic male politicians who can’t keep it zipped might stumble upon it. Agent: Thomas J. Winters, Winters & King. (Oct. 22)
