Love Alters Not
Patricia Veryan. St. Martin's Press, $18.95 (373pp) ISBN 978-0-312-01062-1
The fourth volume of the Golden Chronicles series continues the story of the mission entrusted to Bonnie Prince Charlie's underground followers. The cypher that will lead to the source of the Jacobite treasury, which when found will be distributed to the Loyalists, is entrusted to Horatio Glendenning, known from the earlier volumes. When he is wounded, he passes the cypher to Miss Dimity (Mitten) Cranford, knowing that out of loyalty to him and to her soldiering brothers, she will deliver it to the right person. Dimity, however, gets caught up in an adventure of her own, one that causes her to assume an unladylike guise and become responsible for a six-year-old boy, whose identity is a mystery. Dimity and the boy are headed for the same destination. How they work out their destinies there combines high adventure and rosy romance, in keeping with Veryan's previous historical novels.
