Mary Alice Returns
Jeffrey Allen. Little Brown and Company, $13.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-316-03429-6
This sequel to the popular Mary Alice, Operator Number 9 is lots of fun, but not quite as strong a story as its predecessor. Mary Alice, the switchboard operator duck, is as dependable and lovable as ever. When she hears repeated cries for help, she sets out to find and aid the caller, but her efforts are unsuccessful. She does finally trace the call, but it's too easy, and what she discovers, though humorous, is a bit of a letdown. But why quibble? Marshall's pictures are again colorful and lighthearted, his characters comical, and children will enjoy them and their story. (48)
