Threadbear
Mick Inkpen. Little Brown and Company, $14.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-316-41884-3
The latest book by the prolific Inkpen ( The Blue Ballon ; One Bear at Bedtime ) is easily judged by its cover, which boasts a clever title; an engaging picture of a well-worn, smiling teddy hanging by its ear on a clothesline; and a cushioned, paper-over-board binding that is pleasingly soft to the touch. And the cover does not disappoint: the book is a real charmer throughout. Ben loves his aptly named Threadbear, even though the squeaker in the teddy's tummy has never worked. But this defective part vexes the bear considerably. Ben's other toys try to console him, and one has a great idea: if Threadbear could find his way to the North Pole--``You can get to it up the chimney, I think''--perhaps Santa Claus could help out. Readers will relish accompanying the teddy on his quest, and will especially delight in discovering (when they press the picture of Threadbear on the book's final page) that his squeaker works at last. Ages 3-8. (Sept.)
