Thin Ice
Marc Talbert. Little Brown and Company, $12.95 (207pp) ISBN 978-0-316-83133-8
In this second novel by the award-winning author of Dead Birds Singing, Talbert gives readers a glimpse into the thoughts of a 10-year-old boy and his fifth grade teacher in a way that is remarkably clear and uncondescending. Martin Enders is troubled and angry when his father leaves the family to move to Alaska. Martin shirks his schoolwork and feuds with Barney, who had been his best friend all his life. Mr. Raven, Martin's teacher, meets Mrs. Enders at a parent-teacher conference and they begin dating. Martin lashes out at everyone, in ways that even surprise himself. Mr. Raven reconciles Barney and Martin. And, after Martin runs away from home because he thinks that his mother slept with Mr. Raven, he returns and grudgingly accepts his teacher's presence in the family. A beautifully written book that explores the turbulent feelings engendered by divorce and growing up. (8-12)
