Borrowing Bunnies: A Surprising True Tale of Fostering Rabbits
Cynthia Lord, illus. by Hazel Mitchell, photos by John Bald. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $17.99 (40p) ISBN 978-0-374-30841-4
Lord shares her personal story of fostering a pair of Netherland Dwarf rescue bunnies. Photographer Bald, Lord’s husband, documents the experience of caring for these rabbits, named Benjamin and Peggotty, before they are adopted. Living in a foster home comes with unfamiliar tastes for the rabbits, such as banana treats. And an unexpected development occurs for the humans when Peggotty gives birth to four babies, two of which survive and “kept growing and growing and growing!” After finding homes for the new bunnies, Lord happily announces, “My family adopted Benjamin, and now he’s ours—for keeps.” Spot-art illustrations of rabbits provide a playful element, while the photographs—including those of Lord herself cuddling with the bunnies—make the foster story especially intimate. Ages 3–6. (Feb.)
