The Treasure of Cozy Cove, Or, the Voyage of the ""Kipper""
Tony Ross. Farrar Straus Giroux, $12.95 (26pp) ISBN 978-0-374-37744-1
Two kittens doomed to a watery grave are rescued in the nick of time by Cap'n Claws, a ginger cat in pirate garb who turns their young heads with tales of treasure and adventure on the high seas. The three set out in search of a ship and come face to face with Tiddles 'Awkins, the toughest cat in the Drain--no stranger to danger, his eye patch and three peg legs haven't dampened this fearless feline's love of booty. 'Awkins sells the trio a gaff-rigged craft named the Kipper and stows himself away with the intention of plundering the other cats' treasure. The attack of a giant fish disturbs 'Awkins's plans, however, and Cap'n Claws and the kittens are washed ashore and rescued by a dear old lady. Filled with surprises, Ross's tale of treasure and piracy is captivating in its originality. His colored pencil illustrations are laid out in comic book style and appear to be a hybrid of theatrical and architectural influences. With its zany, unusual art and story, this fanciful yarn could well become one of the ``treasures'' in any child's collection. Ages 5-8. (Apr.)
