The Nobody Club

Although Marcy and Kim consider themselves to be losers, they do, at least, have each other. They also have a common problem: gymnastics. When both girls are coerced into taking lessons, their image of themselves is almost more then they can bear: ``A fat Nobody and a skinny Nobody. In leotards . . . .'' To make matters worse, one of the more popular fifth graders, perfect Jay Jay, shows up at registration. In the beginning, Marcy and Kim have their share of humiliations while struggling to meet the demands of their strict coach. But both emerge triumphant at the final gymnastics meet. By the end of the summer, they have shaped up their bodies, gained confidence and have even helped a new friend to overcome her fears. The message that concentration and determination will bring success is loud and clear. Harrah effectively depicts the emotional ups and downs experienced by all athletes; cynical Marcy and enthusiastic Kim make a humorous, sympathetic pair. Jay Jay, a one-dimensional foe, is less convincing. Although not particularly innovative, this novel is warm and amusing. Ages 8-12. (Apr.)
