The Boy Behind the Counter
Kalindi Handler. Avon Books, $2.5 (160pp) ISBN 978-0-380-75646-9
High school student Ellen is loyal to George, the eccentric owner of an old-fashioned ice cream store known as Sweet Creams. Because of an aggressive real estate developer known for driving stores out with rent increases, George's shop is one of the few small businesses remaining in the neighborhood. George is devastated when the developer not only doubles his rent, but also opens a gaudy ice cream store (part of a chain) across from Sweet Creams. Ellen decides she must fight for Sweet Creams, leading a campaign to save the shop, and then falls in love with the developer's son. With the help of friends and the community, Ellen holds on to her principles in spite of her feelings. This is light reading, only mildly entertaining. Ages 12-up. (Mar.)
